Budget Fashion

By | Friday, May 22, 2015
Hey all,

Yanni here, and it's been far too long since I've posted. Chels really has been the main driving force for the past couple of months, and we really owe it to you guys to pump out fresh content every week. So without further ado, this week I'm focusing on budget fashion.

I know that many of you guys are apprehensive about bargain hunting, secondhand clothing shopping and all that under 'budget buys'. Some may even think it impossible to achieve. Like Chels said in a couple posts earlier, fashion on a budget is completely doable and I think, is far more rewarding.

Discount/Sales racks

I guess this goes without saying but, always sift through the clearance racks before checking out the full priced items! You'll often find pieces that are out of season, stained/crumpled or struggling to be sold in these racks. Chelsea's our Queen of digging up forgotten jewels and pearls of the sales section. She always comes back with stories of her great conquests - I mean $18 for a Bardot top?!? Too good.

Flea markets

Suitcase Rummage, every 1st and 3rd Sunday, every month

To be honest, I cannot bring myself to buy clothing at boutiques and trendy brands. I'm always on the look out for new styles, cuts and textures on the market, BUT since I am trying to save up every dollar and cent for my big overseas trip, I must resist temptation. Fleas markets are the perfect place to pick up great, pre-loved pieces for a dirt cheap price. Markets such as the Suitcase Rummage pack such a lively atmosphere, and for me personally, there's nothing more satisfying then digging through someone else's past-wardrobe and getting a feel for their personal style.

OP shops - secondhand/vintage clothing

My local Salvos store

OP shopping is something I picked up very recently, and it's now my favourite way to shop for clothing. You are supporting a good cause (as most OP shops are charities) and you're promoting a sustainable lifestyle by recycling and reusing someone else's preloved item. Not only is it easier on your wallet, but these stores - flea markets too - force you to make a statement about your style, something that shouldn't be predetermined by all the current fashion trends at the moment.

At the end of the day, it's all about having fun and exploring your creative disposition. Mid-priced trendy retailers like General Pants Co, DISSH and Universal Store sell a certain style of clothing that many think is necessarily 'cool' and 'fetchin'. Don't be pressured into a $40 tee because all your mates sport it. I know we're all poor students here, but who says we can't be stylish too?

Love,
Yanni
